Receiving Feedback as Crucial for Growth
Most Thursday nights you will find me at the local open mic. In between sets, the sound person works with the musicians to plug in their instruments and check their microphones. Occasionally, we are treated to the distinct sound of a microphone’s high-pitched squeal. “Could we get more voice or guitar in the monitor?” are common requests.
The process of checking microphones, plugging in instruments, and adjusting the sound isn’t always a pleasant one, but it is a vitally important part of the live music experience. All of this is feedback that helps to ensure the best possible experience for the performers and the audience.
As a leader, a teacher, and a lifelong learner you want to know that your efforts are making a difference. You want to grow and improve by honing your craft over time. Because of these desires, feedback is crucial. It isn’t always pleasant, but the more consistently you incorporate the practice of seeking regular feedback into your work, (and the clearer you can be about the type of feedback that is most useful) the more you will grow and improve.
Consider these questions:
- In what ways are you seeking feedback at regular intervals?
- What sources do you trust when it comes to receiving feedback?
- What feedback have you been able to incorporate into your leadership that has proven beneficial?
